The story of Luna, a spirited silver fox, is another testament to the perseverance and dedication of Black Foxes UK, as well as the power of community collaboration. Luna’s journey to safety in March 2021, was nothing short of a rollercoaster, filled with twists, turns, and plenty of heart-stopping moments.
It all began in Barry, Wales, when Luna and her male companion made a break for freedom. Their escapes quickly became a race against time, with both foxes venturing into increasingly dangerous areas. While the male was eventually caught by the RSPCA after Black Foxes UK raised the alarm about the urgency of the situation, it wasn’t without challenges. We enlisted the help of Shua Trust Home & Sanctuary, and with our guidance, they had come close to trapping him on several occasions, but he was a clever one—soon learning to avoid our tactics. He began roaming busy streets and navigating heavy traffic during rush hour, making his capture incredibly difficult.
Luna, on the other hand, faced a different but equally harrowing fate. She was caught in a snare left by a local trapper, an incident that underscores why we at Black Foxes UK strongly support the banning of snares in Wales and hope to see Britain and Scotland follow suit. Snares are cruel and indiscriminate, and Luna’s story is a reminder of the damage they can cause to wildlife.
Thankfully, our rescuers were able to act swiftly. Following our advice on trapping and care, they managed to safely capture Luna and bring her to safety. Due to the severe injuries she sustained, we paid for the amputation of her leg—a life-saving procedure that allowed her to start a new chapter. Despite her traumatic experience, Luna’s spirit remained strong.
After her recovery, we were overjoyed to find her a forever home alongside Wilf and Kit, where she now lives a peaceful and safe life at Animal Farm Adventure Park in Somerset. The rescue of Luna and her companion garnered media attention for several weeks, as the local community rallied together in support of their capture and rehabilitation. It was a massive effort, taking weeks of hard work, but the outcome was worth every moment.
Luna’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance in wildlife rescue and the impact we can make when we come together. Stay tuned for more inspiring stories as we continue our mission to protect foxes and raise awareness for their welfare!
