In April 2018, Evie, a spirited fox, found herself in need of a new home. Her private keeper made the difficult decision to rehome her after she and her companion, Vex, began bickering. To make matters worse, complaints from neighbours led to action from the local council, leaving Evie's owner with little choice.
Evie was initially rehomed by her owner to the keeper of Venus, another fox with a remarkable story! Venus had been discovered in a field, surrounded by a litter of dead fox cubs and her melanistic mother, tragically trampled by a horse.
Her rescuer reached out to Black Foxes UK for support when she first brought Venus home. It was suspected that Venus’ mother had been an escapee and giving birth in the wild, unaware of the dangers around her. Despite the sad start, Venus' keeper offered her a safe and loving home, and when Evie's situation became dire, they stepped in to offer assistance.
Unfortunately, as is often the case with female foxes, Evie and Venus didn’t get along. Concerned that the tension might lead to injury, both keepers reached out to Black Foxes UK for further help. We quickly found Evie a new home with a private keeper who could provide the care she needed.
Evie’s transition, however, was not without challenges. Her new keepers initially struggled to understand her behaviour, and settling in took time. But with support from Black Foxes UK, they learned how to work with Evie’s unique personality, helping her adapt to her new surroundings. Over time, she began to thrive in her new home, and her original owner still visits regularly to check in on her.
Tragically, we learnt that Vex's life was cut short in February 2021. His owner shared the heartbreaking news: "With painful sadness in my heart, I struggle to find words to tell you that my beloved boy Vex suddenly passed away on the way to the emergency vets on the 25th February. Vex had a status epilepticus, a life-threatening fit. He had shown no signs of anything being wrong until that morning. My beautiful boy was gone, just like that.."
Evie’s journey, from the challenges of her bickering with Vex to finding a peaceful, loving home, is a testament to the power of patience, understanding, and collaboration. Today, she is living her best life, surrounded by people who care deeply for her and with regular visits from her previous owners and their canine companions. We wish them all the very best!
