At Black Foxes UK, we are privileged to have encountered many remarkable foxes over the years. Among them, two melanistic foxes stand out for their age and the deep understanding we've gained from observing them: Scamp, a now 10-year-old rescue fox, and Mel II, a wild fox who captivated us with his bold spirit until his recent, tragic passing.
Scamp: From Rescue to His Forever Home in Norfolk
Scamp’s story began with a behavioural consultation. What was meant to be a routine check turned into something far more critical when it became clear that Scamp's living conditions were far from suitable. His keeper struggled to manage his needs, and tensions with the neighbour escalated to the point where Scamp's life was threatened if he ever escaped again.
After a three-hour journey with our founder and her sister, Scamp found his way to safety. However, life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges, and when the founder went through a difficult marriage breakdown, she made the heart-wrenching decision to rehome Scamp. While this was a tough call, it was the right one for his wellbeing. It was finding this process so difficult that made her decide that she would assist anyone else rehoming a fox in future, and she has been assisting keepers rehome silver foxes ever since.
Today, Scamp (now called Ash) lives in Norfolk, and has enjoyed the royal treatment at Wild Touch Wildlife Encounters, where he has lived for most of his life with his girlfriend Bracken, who sadly lost her life due to old age, earlier this year. As he approaches his 11th birthday in April, he continues to thrive, showing that foxes, when given proper care and protection, can lead long and fulfilling lives.
Mel II: A Wild Spirit in a Changing World
Mel II's story is one that touches both the heart and the mind. For years, we documented this melanistic wild fox from afar, admiring his intelligence and adaptability. As he aged, Mel II began to frequent the gardens of several Black Foxes UK members, forming a unique bond with the community. His boldness in visiting during daylight hours became a familiar sight, and thanks to our network of members, we were able to keep a close eye on his movements and wellbeing.
Unfortunately, with age comes vulnerability, and Mel II was beginning to show signs of wear from his many years in the wild. Tragedy struck when he was hit by a car, likely by someone pulling out of their driveway. Mel II’s sudden death was a blow not only to our team but to the local community who had grown to cherish his presence.
What We’ve Learned from Scamp and Mel II
These two foxes, though their paths were different, have taught us so much about fox behaviour, longevity, and the challenges they face both in captivity and the wild. Scamp's story is a testament to the resilience of rescue animals, showing how much they can flourish when given the right care. Mel II’s tale, though ending in heartbreak, reminds us of the dangers urban foxes encounter daily, but also the bonds they can form with humans when mutual respect is established.
We invite you to reflect on the importance of understanding and protecting these remarkable creatures. Whether they live in the wild or under human care, foxes like Scamp and Mel II show us that, with the right environment and attention, they can lead long, impactful lives.
Let’s work together to ensure that their stories are not only remembered but also inspire action to safeguard future generations of foxes!
