At Black Foxes UK, each of our rescues has a unique story, and the journey of Silver, Ruda, Chloe, and Jaeger is no different. These four stunning foxes lived together at Joys Pets under the care of their keeper, who featured in the short documentary "My Pet Fox" by Sibthorp Productions.
Sadly, life took an unexpected turn when the business owner parted ways with his partner and, heartbroken, was forced to rehome his beloved foxes.
In 2020, we stepped in to help find them new homes. Given the complexities of rehoming exotic foxes, this wasn’t an easy task. At the time, very few homes in the UK were equipped to care for these rare foxes, and many animal establishments were reluctant to take on the risk, particularly since they were not neutered. These foxes were unknown to most, and it became clear that finding the right environment would be crucial for their well-being.
After careful consideration, we found a loving home for three of the foxes—Silver, Ruda, and Chloe—with a private keeper who had the experience to care for them. However, Jaeger, who had grown used to more human contact and was highly social, needed something different. To ensure he received the attention and companionship he craved, we rehomed him separately with another experienced private keeper who had a male fox of her own to keep Jaeger company.
Though Jaeger settled well in his new home, he had a brief moment of adventure in June 2021 when he managed to escape. His keeper acted swiftly, and Jaeger was safely captured and returned before long, but it gave us all a bit of a scare!
Unfortunately, later that year, tragedy struck. In 2021, we received the devastating news from Jaeger’s new keeper that he had suddenly passed away from an acute, fatal condition. Determined to understand what had happened, Black Foxes UK arranged a post-mortem, but sadly, the exact cause of death remained undetermined. The vet suspected it was related to a gastrointestinal condition, but nothing conclusive could be found. His loss was a deep blow to all who knew and loved him.
Despite this heartbreaking turn, there is solace in knowing that Silver, Ruda, and Chloe continue to thrive in their new home. We receive regular updates on their progress, and they are all doing wonderfully. Their story is a reminder of the complexities of caring for exotic animals, the challenges we face in rehoming them, and the bittersweet nature of rescue work.
Jaeger may be gone, but his memory lives on, and we continue to do everything in our power to protect and care for foxes just like him. His story will always hold a special place in our hearts as we work towards ensuring the safety and happiness of these remarkable creatures.
