In February 2017, a silver fox made headlines across the UK, sparking curiosity and excitement. At first, we at Black Foxes UK thought it might be a rare sighting of a wild black fox, as we had no reports of escaped pets. Over the years, occasional glimpses of black foxes in the wild had intrigued locals, but this fox’s behaviour was different. It became active during unusual hours and its movements suggested it was more accustomed to human presence. As the reports grew more frequent, it became clear—this was no wild fox, but a lost pet.
Determined to help, we launched a social media appeal, and it wasn’t long before we were contacted by the fox’s worried owner. They assured us that steps had been taken to secure the enclosure after the escape and were ready to respond to any further sightings. With the owner’s commitment to retrieving their fox safely, we set up a system to pass on relevant reports directly to them, ensuring any new information would lead them closer to bringing their fox home.
Days passed with occasional sightings, but then, the breakthrough moment came. One afternoon, I received a phone call from someone who had spotted the fox—not just running through the fields or hiding in the shadows—but right in their garden, in broad daylight! The fox had clearly been out for some time and, now hungry and exhausted, seemed to be seeking shelter. This was our chance to safely bring it home.
The caller was eager to help but understandably nervous about how to handle such a situation. I immediately walked them through the process over the phone, offering step-by-step advice to ensure the capture would be safe for both the handler and the fox. We devised a plan to gently coax the fox into a garden shed, where it could be contained until the owner arrived. With patience and care, the caller followed my instructions, and within a short time, the silver fox was safely secured inside the shed, awaiting its journey home.
The owner arrived shortly after, overjoyed to find their adventurous fox safe and sound. It was clear that the fox, though tired and likely hungry, was happy to be reunited with the familiar faces of home. No doubt she had enjoyed her little escapade, exploring new territories and giving locals quite the story to tell!
This rescue highlighted the importance of community cooperation and quick action. Thanks to the kindness of a local resident and the dedication of the owner, the fox was brought home safely and without incident. While we’re sure she relished her time of freedom, we were glad to know she was now back where she belonged, safe and secure. The silver fox’s adventure will always be remembered as one of those quirky and heartwarming stories that reminds us of the unpredictable nature of life with these remarkable creatures.
At Black Foxes UK, we’re always here to help ensure that, no matter the circumstance, foxes—wild or otherwise—find their way to safety.
