At Black Foxes UK, we’ve always been committed to the welfare of foxes. Over time, our focus has grown to include creating a more harmonious relationship between people and wildlife, promoting ethical ways to support fox health in their natural habitats.
Building on the success of our Fight the Mite! campaign, which introduced the concept of zoopharmacognosy (self-medication in animals), we’re excited to announce new partnerships. We’ve teamed up with the innovative start-up The Seed House to offer their EcoFox Seed Packs, designed to support natural foraging and wellness in foxes.
Additionally, we’re exploring the creation of a CPD (Continuing Professional Development) certificate in Wild Welfare, through the development of the Institute of Vulpine Ethics.
Fight the Mite! A Quick Recap
Previously, Fight the Mite! was our initiative to help combat fox mange, a painful condition caused by parasitic mites. Foxes, like other animals, sometimes turn to nature for remedies, selecting plants that repel parasites and support immunity. This fascinating behavior inspired our seed packs, allowing people to plant specific herbs and plants in their gardens to create natural healing spaces for foxes and other wildlife.
Plants like mugwort, lavender, and wormwood were carefully chosen for their parasite-repelling properties, creating a sanctuary for foxes to manage their health more naturally.
EcoFox Seed Packs: Nurturing Fox Health
The EcoFox Seed Packs are an extension of the Fight the Mite! campaign, aimed at empowering individuals to create eco-friendly, fox-friendly gardens. These packs include plants with natural healing properties, curated to support fox welfare and offer essential resources to other garden wildlife. Here’s a look at what EcoFox Seed Packs will offer:
The Power of Plants: Each seed pack contains a selection of plants that foxes and other wildlife may instinctively use. For example, mugwort and lavender have known immune-boosting and pest-repelling effects, while wormwood may deter certain mites and parasites. By growing these plants, you’re not only contributing to a balanced ecosystem but also creating a self-sustaining support system for wildlife.
Engaging Fox Friends and Nature Enthusiasts: EcoFox Seed Packs aren’t only about supporting foxes. They’re designed to nurture a natural landscape that encourages pollinators, birds, and other creatures to thrive. This blend of plants also promotes biodiversity, making your garden an ideal space for wildlife to flourish.
How You Can Get Involved: EcoFox Seed Packs will be available soon, with proceeds going directly to fund future initiatives at Black Foxes UK. By purchasing and planting these seeds, you’re actively participating in a community-driven effort to support wildlife.
Upcoming CPD Course in Wild Welfare: Ethical Fox Habitat Management
In addition to EcoFox Seed Packs, we’re excited to explore the development of the Institute of Vulpine Ethics and a CPD-certified Wild Welfare Certificate designed to offer rescuers, conservationists, and wildlife enthusiasts practical skills in managing wild fox populations ethically and professionally. This potential course could cover:
Understanding Fox Ecology and Behavior: Gain insights into fox habitat needs, natural behaviors, and how to create and maintain environments that support these behaviors. Topics could include feeding habits, den usage, and common stress factors in urban and rural landscapes.
Mange and Health Management: Building on the concepts from our Fight the Mite! campaign, we’ll dive deeper into fox health, with a focus on diagnosing and managing mange. Participants would learn ethical intervention methods, proper use of treatments, and guidance on when to seek veterinary involvement.
Ethical Conservation Practices: Learn the importance of coexisting peacefully with foxes by establishing boundaries, avoiding unnecessary interference, and respecting the fox’s role in local ecosystems.
Hands-On Training for Practical Wildlife Management: From habitat creation to disease monitoring, our course could provide real-life applications and protocols to ensure that your actions benefit both individual foxes and the broader ecosystem.
Expert Contributions and Collaboration: We are considering partnerships with leading wildlife organizations like the Royal Veterinary College and the British Wildlife Rehabilitation Council, aiming to provide well-rounded knowledge from top experts in the field.
How Can You Help?
We’re thrilled to help develop these resources and would love your input! Here’s how you can contribute:
